Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the uranium and radium in the soil and can be found all over the world. Radon gas is an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that is a Class A carcinogen and is known to cause lung cancer in humans. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer right behind cigarette smoking and ahead of second hand smoke. And if that’s not enough to raise your concern, the EPA has determined that southeastern Wisconsin is a number one area for radon gas emitting from the soils.

So it is obvious that we don’t want this gas inside our homes but how do you remove it? Our approach at Cobblestone Builders is to install an active abatement system in all of our homes during the new construction process. This active system removes the gas via an in-line fan which is located in the attic and connected to a 3” or 4” PVC pipe which in turn is then connected to a “tee” or the drain tile below the basement floor slab. The fan which runs 24/7 then creates a negative air pressure below the basement floor pulling air and along with it radon gas and moisture through the PVC pipe and exhausting it above the roof line of the house abating the radon gas. Along with this system we provide sealed sump crocks with submersible pumps preventing the penetration of gas through what normally would be an open crock. The result is a home that has better indoor air quality, lower moisture levels and is professionally tested assuring you that the radon gas is abated.Radon Gas Enters Home

The EPA recommended level for radon gas in your home is no more than 4 picocuries per liter of air. To find out your level all you need to do is perform a simple test which can be found easily at a variety of different stores so protect yourself and your family and test today.
